the shapelessness required to belong (4.)

 as a child
                I drowned

                and I remember
                                      so vividly

                                                            the light
                                          lapping at the edges
                                        of the vanishing point

                inviting me
            to be unmade

            and
                      at last

            become
                          rain.

                                    and
                      at last

                        a child of the mist
                        imagined
                        nothing at all

                        and called it death.

          (and in a way

            I remained    unborn

            until that moment

          when you plucked me
          from the undertow of voices

                                          and peeled from me
                                          everything
                                          but the stillness of light.)
