The Ortolan

(1.)

   today
I fell out of my clothes

                   and my mind
                                 expelled me
                                 not
                                 into sleep

                                 but      into deep
                                               undertows
                                                    of flesh instead.

(a liminal space

where haste
is a carnivorous weed

and the more that you twist
to get away
the deeper it sinks its roots into you.

it says I taste
                      like sunlight.

some lonely hours
that still thrills me.)

(2.)

there are people
                    living
in my eye sockets

their little hands
stretch out
toward the plug
in the back of my head

                            always they pray

to be drained
safely into dreams

never to reach it.

(I have been killing them   with kindness

               drowning them
                               slow

               one tear
                                of joy
               at a time.)

(3.)

heaven
is a thought

an orgy of silhouettes
                    projected

upon the back wall of the skull.

(put a bullet in it

and let god trickle in
through the cracks.)

(4.)

nudity is war,

every fifth touch is a tracer,

                              a stroboscopic exhale of form

              I
                am
                     not

                          alone
                                    in
                                        here

(they hide    their faces
beneath    napkins
to savor  the intimacy
of sin

whole banquets
of ortolan
tear each other apart
as to be the lucky one
who leaves their throats

but from so far
behind their teeth

I cannot
swallow whole
all
that their fury fails to tell…

I keep choking
on bones that taste
like my own.)

(5.)

if that which is loved
is subject to decay

my bone marrow
must still be the color of spring

(you should know

you wiped your hands clean
on the edge of the bed

my shame
still on your breath
as you kissed me goodnight.)

((you said I tasted like sunlight))
