the shapelessness required to belong (10.)

and
        by the end

as the last
maelstrom of sky
                    abandoned lung

                 there   remained

only

          a portrait
          painted in fog
upon
the glass heart of Death

                                 a fingertip’s
                 fateful retracing
                 of a drug addict’s
                 hastily discarded
                 edges

                            it read:

“and here was I
                 and all my tears
                                  of joy
all my
stammering
against the unceasing still

a penitent mute
                        a mother’s boy

slowly forgiving
the hope
that
      had
             him
                   killed.”

                   (now
                      I recall
                            life

                          only in
                          spent light

                                        in
                                        broken constellations

                                        of
                                        sensate intangibles.)
