There Are Rainbows In The Basement (but please don’t go and check.)

(1.) Violet

some senses are memorials

I will forever lay flowers
by the smell of a lunchbox
that has carried home
an apple core

and the sound
of a woodpigeon cooing
when tides of dusk
lap at the shores
of the longest day

and the sight
of a woman
framed by an open window
whispering to me
only in smoke
the depth of night.

(and the feeling
of scar tissues meeting
for the very first time
somewhere in the dark.)

(2.) Indigo

Some tides
are not promised to the moon
some are moving toward even the distant most stars

perhaps it was one of those
that carried you away.

(now you perish again
in every second glance

and the corners of my eyes
are a graveyard
where the stones
only hold a single name.)

(3.) Blue

and when it fell
rain on the glacier
nobody called it a suicide

but I think
sometimes it’s good
to mourn the changing of state

(I am 759 days sober now
and in that time I have written 215 poems
and all of them
have been a eulogy
to the people we cannot hold onto
or ever be
again.)

(4.) Green

all must die

may it ease you

these moments amid death

these shimmering
dreams of green
in maelstrom sleep.

(some will go their whole lives
without wondering
if this universe
is not just a drop of lichen
upon a stone called God.)

(5.) Yellow

my dear,

if anything
had ever stood a chance
at rearing the sunflowers of my heart
from the toothless cruelty of death

it would have been you.

(but alas,
you only existed in touch
and I,

well…
not so much.)

(6.) Orange

somethings
exist
only because
they cannot be touched

like the sunlight
that slumbers
in the backgarden
as stowaways
in cauls of rain

one shattered ocean
harboring another

a universe
clinging
to a clothesline.

(they talk
in their sleep
but it’s all in

        Radiohead lyrics.)

(7.) Red

sometimes
our tears
become weapons of mass destruction

in a sense
I am a product
of a myriad
of intimate apocalypses.

(sometimes
I sit and watch
the eidolon grazing the fields
and I cannot help but wonder
if darkness finally flooding
this wound called light
is really such a bad thing.)
