(1.)
when autumn comes
I may forget
the smell of nettles
but when it gets cold
I will forever recall
how your hair
broke in silver waves
upon these shores of skin
and left me
shipwrecked
in this dream
of breath
and bone.
(starlings murmurate
to stay warm
and as protection against predators
maybe that is why
memories of you
dance me dizzy
at every bruising of the blue.)
(2.)
at noon
the carpenter bees
rest on islands of allium
earthly
sighs
of
relief
that drift dearly
ever deeper
in hazelnut shade
I suppose
these buzzing splinters of a void
too must dream
of windsong
the eternal call
of timedrenched gods
in need of pollinating
grief whispers
“best to let them rest.”
and for once
we agree.
(3.)
sundown
prunes with tender hand
the shadows of our garden
we drink blackcurrant soda
as the southern wall
hums a summer’s glow
at every omission of dress
and the cat
curled up
in an old fruitbasket
sings softly to us
of her troubles
as she labors
through shallows
of sleep
and the bats
to whom night
is not
a non-Newtonian fluid
tumble
in
and
out
of existence overhead
and
all is well.
(4.)
like pepper
from
the vine
you
would melt the sun
into nightfall
upon tongue
breaching me
with your heat
you braided your flame to my veins
because in my skin alone
I was chasm
and void
jagged and cold
but tangled up in you?
there I was lapis
liquid
and
wild
ocean stone
rippling gold
with the weight
of a beloved reflection.
(5.)
my ephemeral immortal
you
were lightning
in a storm of pollen
grief
in a galaxy of lovesome oath
you
were the ache
that set all of amnion abloom
so here’s to you
goodnight
my love
I’ll be there soon.
